Impact of diversity on classroom interaction and extra curricular activities
In this weeks class, we examined the impact of race/ethnicity, SES, gender/sexual orientation, language, [ and disability on extracurricular activities and classroom interactions. These interactions include teacher/student interactions and student-student interactions. Many times, educators often overlook the impact of these components of diversity on classroom interactions and extra curricular activities. As an assignment, the teachers maintained a log of classroom interactions and extracurricular activities observed in their school setting or in a school they visited. The log reflected the following:
a. Interactions of faculty and staff with boys and girls, including race/ethnicity, disabilities, SES, language used, types of interactions, frequency of interactions, etc.
b. Interaction of boys and girls with each other, specifically observing areas of diversity (gender, race/ethnicity, disabilities, SES, language). For example, do students generally interact only within their own racial/ethnic groups, what is the interaction like between students with disabilities and those without disabilities, etc.
c. Involvement of students in extracurricular activities, specifically observing areas of diversity (gender, race/ethnicity, disabilities, SES, language). For example, are more boys involved than girl, do students with disability participate at all and if so, in what ways, does SES affect involvement in extracurricular activities, etc.
