Question and answer
describe ways in which individuals and carers can be supported to overcome their fears
There are a multitude of ways. Fears can be overcome by finding supporters. When individuals have friends and family supporting them, they have a tendency to feel better about doing things they may have been unsure about. [ The same is true of finding someone else to do whatever you are scared of along with you. Second, practice always decreases fear. Familiarity makes you better able to handle
fears. Additionally, pretending that no one else is around usually helps - it decreases inhibition and makes you better able to do what you want/to try new things without the fear of embarrassment or discomfort. ]

You might feel helpless as a result of not knowing what to do. [ However, it is not absolutely necessary to understand the cause of the distress in order to be able to help. You can still offer reassurance, affection and express your concern. As you will see below, you can also take measures to reduce the likelihood of the person with dementia feeling anxious or afraid. ] (More)
