Question and answer
why is brainstorming important in writing?
Brainstorming is the first stage of writing, often called "prewriting." Brainstorming is the process of gathering all of your ideas and getting them on paper without editing them. The brainstorming stage does not involve editing, [ so don't censor your ideas. There will be enough time to edit later; right now you want to get all of your ideas down so that you don't forget anything.
Brainstorming is NOT an outline, NOT a draft and certainly NOT an essay. The purpose of brainstorming is to write out ideas, thoughts, pieces of thoughts, without regard for their connections with each other. Structure and form are not important at this point. What is important is to get everything out of your head and onto paper. If you consciously take advantage of your natural thinking processes by gathering your brain’s energies into a “storm,” you can transform these energies into written words or diagrams that will lead to lively, vibrant writing. Below you will find a brief discussion of what brainstorming is, why you might brainstorm, and suggestions for how you might brainstorm. Whether you are starting with too much information or not enough, brainstorming can help you to put a new writing task in motion or revive a project that hasn’t reached completion. Let’s take a look at each case: When you’ve got nothing: You might need a storm to approach when you feel “blank” about the topic, devoid of inspiration, full of anxiety about the topic, or just too tired to craft an orderly outline. In this case, brainstorming stirs up the dust, whips some air into our stilled pools of thought, and gets the breeze of inspiration moving again. When you’ve got too much: There are times when you have too much chaos in your brain and need to bring in some conscious order. In this case, brainstorming forces the mental chaos and random thoughts to rain out onto the page, giving you some concrete words or schemas that you can then arrange according to their logical relations. ]

how do flashcards of unfamiliar words build your vocabulary skills?
Weegy: Flashcards can help you study and retain difficult and unfamiliar vocabulary words. With flashcards, you repeat the information to make sure you get it down. [ If you stumble across words and phrases you don't understand, write them down and include them in your studying. A simple way to improve your vocabulary is to use the dictionary. Create flash cards of unfamiliar words and practice them in the train, on the bus, or when you wake up in the morning. Try to practice words in a variety of environments so that you really learn them, and make sure to use the words in daily sentences as well so that you can grow accustomed to using them correctly. If you hear someone using a word you don’t recognize, ask him or her about it or look it up. ] (More)

How does identifying and reading primary-sources information increase your reading comprehension?
Weegy: Because they are first-hand accounts of life in the past, created during the time period that you are interested in, [ primary sources provide you with windows into the past — a chance to catch a glimpse at the world you’re trying to understand through the words, pictures, artwork, and objects of the people who lived in it. This window is especially important for historians because, unlike other scholars who study people and societies such as psychologists, sociologists, or anthropologists, historians can’t use direct observation and experimentation to prove their arguments — at least not until the time machine is invented! Instead, historians must rely on the records left behind by the people we’re trying to understand. Of course you could learn about the past by reading your textbook or the conclusions of other historians and reading those secondary sources can be important, but reading secondary texts is no substitute for immersing yourself in the first-hand accounts of primary sources. When you read a secondary source, you are essentially taking someone else’s word for what happened and trusting them to approach the subject objectively, interpret the evidence thoughtfully, and report their findings in interesting and appropriate ways. But you can never know whether what that other person wrote about the past is valid, accurate, or thoughtful unless you’ve explored the evidence for yourself. ] (More)

There are many styles of writing that we use: professional, casual, formal and informal. Do you find it difficult to change styles based on the situation? What determines the writing style that you use?
Weegy: Writing for an audience will involve either a formal or informal style of writing. You need to consider who the target audience is and what type of publication you are writing for in order to determine the writing style that is appropriate. [ [ In terms of the target audience, are you writing for friends and family; for a room full of academic colleagues and lecturers; or perhaps for a board of directors? Formal writing is less personal and more objective than informal writing. Formal writing is almost always targeted at an audience that has existing knowledge on a topic. Whether it is an academic paper or a business report, the key is to know how much existing knowledge those who are to read the publication possess. In formal writing, it is important that you steer clear of slang and colorful words that you’d normally find in a creative writing publication. These types of words, however, are fine in an informal setting. It can be difficult to know what is right and what is wrong when writing for different audiences. This is particularly the case when you are constantly writing for different audiences that require different writing styles. ] (More)
