A: Those saying 49 haven't read the question carefully - the difficulty is that the remainder each time has to be just 1 - and while you get the right remainder if you divide 49 by 2,3,4, or 6, [ it doesn't work when you divide it by 5. you need is a number which can be exactly divided by 7, which is one more than a number which can be divided exactly by 2,3,4,5 and 6 (and all of those are going to be multiples of 60 as that is the smallest number divisible by all of them). Go through them and check if divisible by 7 - 61, 121, 181, 241, 301 (yes), 361, 421, 481, 541, 601, 661, 721 (yes), 781, 841, 901, 961, 1021, 1081, 1141 (yes), 1561 (yes) 1981 (yes) - so from there on it is every 420. So, for example 43981 also works - that is 1981 plus 100 x 420: 2 x 21990 +1 3 x 14660 +1 4 x 10995 +1 5 x 8796 + 1 6 x 7330 +1 7 x 6283 exactly. There are actually an infinite number of correct answers - try dividing 3,634,141 diamonds.
