Wilson's moral diplomacy hoped to promote U.S. interests by influence and control of other countries through economic pressure, only supporting Latin American governments that were democratic or otherwise supported United States interests. This was Wilson's policy of condemning imperialism, spreading democracy, and promoting peace. By refusing to support non-democratic countries, he hoped to hurt them economically and thus force them into submission.
