•Describe the different functions of the central core of the brain compared to the cerebral cortex. Why are both important? What is a daily situation in which each would be used?
Weegy: The Central Core is found in all vertebrates. [ Its five main regions help regulate basic life processes, including breathing, pulse, arousal, movement, balance, sleep, and the early stage of processing sensory information. learner.org/discoveringpsychology/brain/central.html The cerebral cortex covers the outer portion (1.5mm to 5mm) of the cerebrum. The cerebral cortex is involved in several functions of the body including: Determining Intelligence Determining Personality Motor Function Planning and Organization Touch Sensation ] (More)

What is REM sleep and why does it matter?
Weegy: Herein is presented the notion that rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is a sleeping brain's attempt to recover consciousness from the disruption of deep sleep. [ The rationale derives from the following self-evident fact: awakening from deep sleep requires the brain to become “less sleepy” by re-organizing its circuitry toward the threshold for conscious wakefulness. REM may well be a mechanism for moving the brain state in that direction. REM may be a spontaneously triggered state that occurs when the brain has had enough slow-wave sleep (SWS). Rapid eye movement normally occurs only after long sequence of SWS stages, initially dominated by deep Stage N3 [the new equivalent for the older term, Stage IV, according to the classification scheme of 2004 from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (Iber et al., 2007)]. Hereafter, I will use N3 any time I am referring to the more familiar term, Stage IV. In N3 the complex neural network inter-relationships necessary to create and sustain wakefulness must surely be obliterated. REM also promotes numerous conscious-like dreams. Also, the last awakening from a night's sleep typically occurs in a REM episode during a dream, suggesting that the threshold for wakefulness has been reached. These observations lead to the hypothesis that REM might be the brain's way to awaken itself after it has had a sufficient amount of SWS. ] (More)

Identify the stages of sleep
Weegy: The period of NREM sleep is made up of stages 1-5. Stage 1 is a light sleep and you are easily woken. Stage 2 is marked by a loss of nearly all muscle tone. Stage 3 is the beginning of a deep sleep, also known as Slow Wave Sleep. [ Stage 4 is the deepest kind of Slow Wave Sleep. 5.REM Sleep marks the onset of vivid dreaming. ] (More)

Identify the stages of sleep. What is REM sleep and why does it matter?
Weegy: Identify the stages of sleep. What is REM sleep and why does it matter? REM sleep in adult humans typically occupies 20–25% of total sleep, about 90–120 minutes of a night's sleep. [ REM sleep is considered the lightest stage of sleep, and normally occurs close to morning.[4] During a normal night of sleep, humans usually experience about four or five periods of REM sleep; they are quite short at the beginning of the night and longer toward the end. Many animals and some people tend to wake, or experience a period of very light sleep, for a short time immediately after a bout of REM. The relative amount of REM sleep varies considerably with age. A newborn baby spends more than 80% of total sleep time in REM.[5] During REM, the activity of the brain's neurons is quite similar to that during waking hours; for this reason, the REM-sleep stage may be called paradoxical sleep.. for more information about stages of sleep visit: ] (More)

Identify the stages of sleep.
Weegy: There are five stages of sleep: Stage 1 is the beginning of the sleep cycle, and is a relatively light stage of sleep. [ Stage 1 can be considered a transition period between wakefulness and sleep. Stage 2 is the second stage of sleep and lasts for approximately 20 minutes. Stage 3 is a transitional period between light sleep and a very deep sleep. Stage 4 is sometimes referred to as delta sleep because of the slow brain waves known as delta waves that occur during this time. Stage 5. Most dreaming occurs during the fifth stage of sleep, known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. source: psychology.about.com/od/statesofconsciousness/a/SleepStages.htm ] (More)
