What exactly is the skeleton system and how does it function?
Weegy: The skeletal system is made up of both fused and individual bones; these bones are further supported by ligaments, tendons, muscles and cartilage. [ The skeletal system is essentially a scaffold which supports the body's organs, anchors the muscles, and offers additional protection to internal organs like the brain and the heart. An adult's skeleton makes up about 30-40% of a person's body weight; around half of this total weight is water. The body's fused bones include the bones of the cranium and the pelvis: these bones are separated at birth, so that newborns have more than 300 bones; as a person ages they grow together and fuse into a single large mass, leaving adults with only about 206 bones. Most of the individual and fused bones are directly connected to one another, but not all of them: three bones in each middle ear (the ossicles) are only connected to each other (not to any other bones in skeletal system) and the hyoid bone, the point of attachment for the tongue, is not connected to any other bones in the body. Instead, it is completely supported by the muscles and ligaments of the neck. There are two parts to the skeletal system: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton has 80 bones, and is made up of the bones of the head, the ribs, and the vertebral column. The appendicular skeleton has 126 bones and includes the bones of the upper and lower limbs and the pelvic and pectoral girdles. The appendicular skeleton's function is to make locomotion possible and to protect the body's major internal organs (aside from those protected by the axial skeleton). The skeleton has several functions apart from support and protection: the joints permit movement, the bone marrow produces red and white blood cells, bone cells release osteocalcin, a hormone which helps regulate blood sugar and fat deposition, and the skeletal cell matrix stores calcium (and is involved in metabolizing calcium), and bone marrow stores some iron (as ... What are dietary supplements?
Weegy: In the United States, dietary supplements are substances you eat or drink. They can be vitamins, minerals, herbs or other plants, amino acids (the individual building blocks of protein), or parts of these substances. [ They can be in pill, capsule, tablet, or liquid form. They supplement (add to) the diet and should not be considered a substitute for food. Dietary supplements are widely available in the United States in health food stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, on the Internet, and by mail. People commonly take them for health-related reasons. Common dietary supplements include vitamins and minerals (such as vitamin C or a multivitamin), botanicals (herbs and plant products, such as St. John's wort), and substances that come from a natural source (such as omega-3 fatty acids). What is the difference of over the counter dietary supplements and perscription supplements
Weegy: Some people experiment with prescription drugs because they think they will help them have more fun, lose weight, fit in, and even study more effectively. [ [ Prescription drugs can be easier to get than street drugs: Family members or friends may have them. But prescription drugs are also sometimes sold on the street like other illegal drugs. ] Many people take dietary supplements in an effort to be well and stay healthy. With so many dietary supplements available and so many claims made about their health benefits, how can a consumer decide what's safe and effective? This fact sheet provides a general overview of dietary supplements, discusses safety considerations, and suggests sources for additional information. Federal regulations for dietary supplements are very different from those for prescription and over-the-counter drugs. For example, a dietary supplement manufacturer does not have to prove a product's safety and effectiveness before it is marketed. If you are thinking about using a dietary supplement, first get information on it from reliable sources. Keep in mind that dietary supplements may interact with medications or other dietary supplements and may contain ingredients not listed on the label. Tell your health care providers about any complementary and alternative practices you use, including dietary supplements. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care. read more: ] (More)
