Weegy: Space is made of nothing that is material or that lends itself to the descriptions of every day language. However, one cannot dispute that space exists. Nor can one make a case that time does not exist. And it is spacetime that is distorted by the effects of gravitation. Einstein documented that gravity is equivalent to acceleration - he said that they are two ways of looking at the same thing, and if you think about it - that makes sense. Now we know that if you stand inside the cabin of a spacecraft and shine a light beam across the cabin while the spacecraft is accelerating, the spacecraft will start to "leave the light beam behind" as it accelerates upward. The net result will be that the light will strike the far wall of the cabin at a slightly lower spot than it would if the spacecraft were not accelerating upward. To the pilot, the light beam will appear to bend as he accelerates. In fact, strictly from his frame of reference, the light does not just appear to bend; it does bend.
But remember that gravity and acceleration are equivalent. So if acceleration makes the light bend from the viewpoint of the pilot, then gravity will do the same thing from the viewpoint of someone that can observe the effects of a gravitational field. Einstein was so certain that he was correct about this that he made a prediction about the bending of starlight as it could be seen passing Sun during the total solar eclipse of 1919 (this is the only time that stars can be readily observed near the disk of the Sun). His predictions were completely accurate. The starlight did bend. These results made Einstein famous and essentially changed his life - and ours - completely.
