he primary job of the S1 involves "manning"- maintaining the unit's overall readiness in terms of the number of troops fit for duty. The S1 is charged with monitoring the unit's current combat capability and developing and implementing plans to maintain that capability- or to improve it if it is lacking. It's also the S1's responsibility to handle personnel replacement and movement- that is, keeping track of who's coming into the unit and who's going out, including casualties. Other manning duties include overseeing reenlistment efforts and supervising the assignment of civilian contractors attached to the unit.

Service Support

The S1 supervises programs that boost morale. These include fitness efforts, recreational activities, family-support programs and awards programs.
