If a bacterium cannot ferment glucose, what result will occur in a fermentation tube?
I assume you're talking about the Simmons' citrate test for your first question. [ If the bacterium can use the citrate on the media, then the pH will change, resulting in a change in media color from the nice green-ish color that the uninoculated media is to a dark blue. If the bacterum cannot use citrate as its primary C source, it will simply stay in lag phase, skip log phase, and basically
die. No food, death (Unless it forms endospores, in which case it might have time to throw a few of those ejection pods out before it dies off). For Mannitol fermentation, I would use the MSA (Mannitol Salt) agar and streak it, the MCK agar (can't remember the acronym atm, sorry, I think it's like MacKonkey?) for lactose/sorbitol fermentation, BBL Phenol Red for adonitol, and TA agar for arabinose testing. ]

Why was the arrangement of Lactococcus from the broth culture and slant culture different in the second period?
Weegy: The broth culture grow many bacteria within a small area (they would b close together). Where as on the slant plate there is a little more room for the bacteria to grow so there arrangement would be different. Weegy: I would think that in a liquid medium the bacterium would like to help retain form/shape,because that what a pellicle is a a thin layer supporting the cell embrane. do all bacteria ferment lactose? User: e. coli and enterobacter aerogenes are small gram negative rods. how can you differentiate them?
Weegy: These two bacterial species are identical in many superficial ways. They both produce white colonies at 37 degrees Celsius on nutrient agar. They both ferment lactose producing acid and gas. [ They are both Gram negative and virtually identical microscopically. To distinguish them we must resort to biochemical tests. They metabolize sugars and other organic compounds, like Citrate, differently. Below are some of the tests we do to distinguish E. coli and E. aerogenes. Note how clearly they differ when we use biochemistry to tell them apart! Below on the left E. coli and Enterobacter aerogenes are growing on the surface of Eosin-Methylene Blue Agar. There is glucose in this medium which both bacteria metabolize. But they both produce different byproducts. E. coli produces a byproduct of glucose metabolism which reacts with the basic dyes in the medium producing a "green metallic sheen" in reflected light. Enterobacter produces normal colonies.
