It depends what kind of sweetener we use. In the case of aspartame, even moderate amounts can be harmful if consumed by pregnant women.

some artificial sweeteners can be harmful/toxic if there are certain enzymes that a person has fewer of than the average person. For example, in diet sodas, phenylalanine can be toxic to a small proportion of the population, this is why there is a warning on the can of diet sodas.
