The first is that there are three major classes of rocks differentiated from one another by their processes for formation. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling of molten rock forming material known as magma and lava.

Sedimentary rocks are formed at the Earth’s surface from the weathered pieces of preexisting rocks. Metamorphic rocks are formed by the physical and chemical alteration of preexisting rocks by the application of heat and pressure.
