A: Helping employers to understand their responsibilities and how to implement their statutory obligations. [ Although providers are responsible for maintaining equality of opportunity as far as it affects learners, employers are also responsible in law.Giving employers or work-placement providers something in writing, to explain and clarify the employers' role and responsibilities. This should
emphasise the importance of adopting fair selection procedures for recruiting learners and protecting them from discrimination, harassment and bullying while they are in the workplace. Having employer handbooks with reference materials that are 'trade-related'. Most effective practice involves provider staff explaining handbook contents to the employer on their initial visit, reinforcing it, and checking it is being followed at subsequent visits. Sharing resources and ideas with the employer to aid recruitment of learners, particularly for under represented groups such as females in engineering or construction and males or Asian girls in hairdressing. One college paid for a female toilet to be built in a previously all male engineering workshop at a garage. Some providers supply employers with leaflets containing appropriate visual imagery to encourage under represented groups into training. Inviting employers to staff training events where equality of opportunity is covered (or provider staff attending employer events if an employer has effective practice). see : ]
