Question and answer
Q: Getting two WindowsXP computers talking to each other in a peer-to-peer (non-server based) network can be problematic at times. When computers don't see each other in Network Neighborhood, what can
be done and why is this necessary? Both machines can access the internet through the router with no problems, they are both in the same workgroup, file and printer sharing is turned on, firewalls have been set up correctly, and there are folders that have been shared with correct permissions on both machines.
A: Open a Command Prompt on either machine and enter ping 192.168.0.2 substituting the IP for that of the other machine. If you receive a reply it means both machines can communicate - ruling out a problem with the physical connections and firewall [ getting in the way. There's a reason Network Neighborhood doesn't work correctly, and you can fix it, but it's not worth the trouble on a small
home network. Just use the IP addresses. NOT computer names, IP addresses. ]
