What about Earth allows it to maintain bodies of water?
Weegy: Lakes Lakes are large bodies (i.e. greater than 20 acres) of inland water. Lakes are an essential source of water in the United States. The Great Lakes hold about 20% of the world's fresh surface water supply and 90% of the United States supply. [ Most of our drinking water, as well as water used for irrigation, industry, and hydropower, comes from freshwater lakes and reservoirs. In addition to these uses, freshwater lakes also provide a resource for recreational activities (boating, swimming, fishing) and habitats for wildlife. [Note: These bodies of water can be composed of either fresh or salt water (e.g. Utah's Great Salt Lake).] Ponds Ponds are smaller than lakes, which support the growth of aquatic plants throughout. Pond ecosystems serve as important habitats for various aquatic and terrestrial species. Ponds are often artificially formed bodies of water, which can have many uses, from crop irrigation to boating, swimming, and fishing. Reservoirs Reservoirs are naturally or artificially formed bodies of water used for the storage and control of water. ] (More)

What about Earth allows it to maintain bodies of water? Earth orbits in the Sun's "Goldilocks zone" where conditions of gravity, atmospheric pressure, and temperature, are "just right" for bodies of water to exist. The Earth is large enough that gravity allows it to hold on to an atmosphere. Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere provide a temperature buffer which helps maintain a relatively steady surface temperature. If Earth were smaller, a thinner atmosphere would allow temperature extremes, thus preventing the accumulation of water except in polar ice caps (as on Mars), and lower gravity would allow water vapor to escape to space.
