What about Earth allows it to maintain bodies of water? Earth orbits in the Sun's "Goldilocks zone" where conditions of gravity, atmospheric pressure, and temperature, are "just right" for bodies of water to exist. The Earth is large enough that gravity allows it to hold on to an atmosphere. Water vapor and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere provide a temperature buffer which helps maintain a relatively steady surface temperature. If Earth were smaller, a thinner atmosphere would allow temperature extremes, thus preventing the accumulation of water except in polar ice caps (as on Mars), and lower gravity would allow water vapor to escape to space.
