User: why are averages used to represent data?

Weegy: No measurement is exactly perfect. In most experiments, if you perform the same measurement twice, the results are slightly different. There will always be random uncertainty and fluctuations in any measurement. As such, you can rarely determine the "exact" value, even when repeating the measurement many times. So we need some way to determine what our estimate of the exact value actually is. The normal way to do that is to take multiple readings and some kind of average. If the majority of the variation comes from random errors, then by taking a large number of readings, these errors should "even out" and the average value will be very close to the "true" value of the experiment. As such, the average is a very common way of expressing this value. Measurements such as standard deviation and standard error are used to give some estimate of how spread out the data is. The larger these values, the greater the uncertainty in your measurement.
