Question and answer
Q: Identify legislation that relates to moving and handling
A: Manual Handling Regulations 1992 (amended 2002) part of Health and Safety at Work 1974 refer to the moving and handling of heavy objects. It is the employer who should assess risk of injury with expected heavy lifting. [ I'm not sure what you mean by "home nursing". i.e. in a care home or in the patient's own home - assuming you are an outreach care worker. As long as you have an employer (i.e.
you are not nursing your own relative in your own unpaid time) then they should supply guidance on this. Health and Safety Executive are the regulatory body if there are any suspected breach of regulation and Local Authority Environmental Health may be able to give information and guidance also. .................... ]

User: Explain principles for moving and handling equipment and other objects safely.

Weegy: Before lifting, take a moment to think about what you're about to do. Examine the object for sharp corners, slippery spots or other potential hazards. Know your limit and don't try to exceed it. [ Ask for help if needed, or if possible, divide the load to make it lighter. Know where you are going to set the item down and make sure it and your path are free of obstructions. Then follow these steps. bullet 1 PREVENT BACK INJURY Prevention is easier than cure. i. Exercise Stretching exercises make the muscles more flexible and motion easier. - Strengthen the muscles in the abdomen (these give the back its support). ii. Good Posture. Stand and sit-up straight, don't stoop. iii. Avoid lifting if you are tired, sick or the load is too big for your frame ... delegate that job to someone else, (be reasonable). iv. Consciously plan every step before you actually perform it, e.g. a. Remove obstacles from the route. b. Pick the final position carefully so that you don't need to move the object again. c. If possible divide the object into smaller units. v. Get help - lift as a team, with one person acting as the leader. vi. Arrange for mechanical help. Don't lift if you don't have to. Wherever possible push rather than pull e.g. a trolley. vii. If it is uncomfortable when commencing to lift, then lower the object/patient immediately. . Get a firm footing. Keep your feet apart for a stable base. Point feet in the direction of travel. ii. Bend your hips and knees instead of bending at the waist. This allows the leg muscles to take the load and not the spine. iii. Tighten abdominal muscles. Abdominal muscles support the spine when lifting. iv. Ensure correct hold. Select a secure grip so that there is no danger of slipping during the lift. v. Brace yourself for the lift, continue to breathe normally through the lift, concentrate on the lift and not on the breathing. vi. Lift steadily don't jerk the load. vii. Keep your back straight and avoid twisting or bending to the side. viii. Keep the load close. ]

User: Identify hazardous substances and materials that may be found in the work setting.

User: Describe safe practices for storing hazardous substances.

Weegy: Substitution can be the best way to avoid or reduce a hazard. Often, though, it is not easy or even possible to find a nonflammable or less flammable substitute to do the job effectively and safely. [ Start by obtaining material safety data sheets (MSDSs) for all possible substitute materials. Find out about all the hazards (fire, health, chemical reactivity) of these materials before making any changes. ]
