Oxygen-18 has an atomic number of 8. How many neutrons are in this isotope?Weegy:
A = mass number, A = protons + neutrons
Z = atomic number, Z = protons
neutrons = A - Z
neutrons = 18 - 8 = 10
====== Follow up ======
The 18 in O-18 is the mass number, NOT the atomic mass.
With all due respect, this is not correct. [ "Atomic number if the number of protons and 18 is the atomic weight in AMU. Since both Protons and Neutrons weigh 1 AMU there are 10 neutrons."
The mass number is NOT a mass, it is an integer, a counting number. A and Z both tell the NUMBER of particles, NOT masses. Kristie and William are both confused by this.
======= More follow up ========
Kristie's book would have to be really old or really wrong for the mass number to be referred to as an actual mass. This statement, "The isotope number, in this case 18, represents the total number of atomic mass units which is also referred to as its atomic weight." is still not correct.
First of all, there is no "isotope number", but the 18 in O-18 is the mass number and it is very important to reiterate that it is not a mass. I know it's confusing, but the mass number is not a mass, it is a dimensionless quantity that gives the number of nucleons. Period. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20100721121919AAtNfWg
