User: What is the main difference between negative and positive feedback?

Weegy: All homeostatic mechanisms are negative feedback mechanisms. They act to maintain a certain condition within normal range by creating the opposite effect when the condition exceeds thresholds in either direction. i.e. [ if blood glucose gets too low, our bodies secrete glucagon to increase conversion of glycogen to glucose and thus raise blood glucose. Alternatively if blood glucose gets too high, our bodies secrete insulin to increase glucose uptake in cells and conversion to glycogen, thus reducing blood glucose. So if the level is too high, homeostasis takes action to reduce it, and if the level is to low, a homeostatic mechanism takes action to raise it. This is the very definition of negative feedback. All positive feedback mechanisms must have a discrete end point. An example of this is the role of oxytocin in labor. When a pregnant woman is ready to deliver, the fetus creates pressure on the cervix. This pressure results in the release of oxytocin, which causes the uterine wall to contract. As the wall contracts, the fetus is forced out, stimulating the cervix, and causing it to secrete more oxytocin. Thus the output reinforces the input causing the stimulus to become stronger and stronger until (in this particular example) the fetus is fully delivered and the stimulation of the cervix and thus the secretion of oxytocin is halted. In summary: The distinction between positive and negative feedback is determined by the relationship between the stimulus and the output of the mechanism. If the mechanism acts to reinforce the stimulus, it is a positive feedback mechanism, whereas if the mechanism acts to correct the stimulus, it is a negative feedback mechanism ]
