As America moved westward into then-Mexican territories of Texas and Oklahoma, the settlers were mostly Southerners, so they brought their accent with them. Louisiana has a distinct accent, different from the rest of the Southeast, due to the rich mixture of cultures there, including French Cajuns, old Spanish influence, and a very large Irish Catholic and Italian population. The mixture of Irish Catholic and Italian accents give New Orleanians especially somewhat of a trace of a New York/Brooklyn accent.
