Question and answer
Q: Leading up to the Civil War the Southern states could accurately be described as: a. nationalists c. federalists b. state's righters d. republicans
A: b. state's righters They were not nationalists because they were intending to break from the Union. [ Many of the states, namely South Carolina were angry about the so-called "Tariff of Abominations" and wanted the ability for states to declare a law void or nullify if they felt that it was not fair. Even though everyone says that the Civil War was about slavery, that was just one of the
contributing factors; the South really wanted state over federal power. They were not Republicans either b/c that was Lincoln's party and he was the one who freed the slaves. In fact, Lincoln's elections spurred many of the states to break from the Union. ]
