How does the strength of an electromagnet depend on the current and the number of turns in the coil?
Weegy: If you place a wire over a compass then connect the ends to a DC battery the resulting electromagnetic force will deflect the (magnetic) needle. Increasing the current will increase the deflection. By doubling then tripling, etc. [ the turns of wire around a metal core you double then triple, etc. the total current and the electromagnetic effect. The iron core is not essential but does concentrate the electromagnetic effect as the magnetism builds up by aligning the tiny 'permanent' magnets (iron atoms) within the iron core. The greater the electromagnetic effect (turns), the great the number of iron atoms that are properly aligned building up a magnetic field. A permanent magnet may be produced by heating the iron hot enough to allow all atoms and iron crystals to permanently align when the sample is cooled down within a strong electromagnetic field. ] (More)
