we arrange first the expression, so it becomes:

y^2 + 17 y + 60 = 0
(y + 5) (y + 12) = 0

Then we can now solve for the values of y:

in (y +5) =0
y = -5

in (y + 12)
y = -12

thus, the values of y are -5 anf - 12.
