What process is used to release energy in nuclear power plants? A.breaking of bonds between atoms B.fission of the atomic nucleus C.fusion of atomic nuclei D.creation of bonds between atoms
Weegy: The basic process is nuclear fission. Each atom in the radioactive fuel has some small probability that it will decay at any given time. There are a lot of atoms, though, so this happens relatively frequently. [ When one does decay, it releases neutrons and energy. If one of those released neutrons collides with another atom's nucleus, that will prompt that next atom to decay, which releases more energy and new neutrons - that decay caused by being hit by a neutron is fission. If you have dense enough fuel, so that there is a good chance that the neutrons will collide with other nuclei, and then the reaction continues on its own, continuing to produce energy. (You can add material that will absorb the released neutrons without decaying to slow down the reaction.) A typical nuclear power plant will use the energy produced by fission to heat water and turn it into steam, which is used to turn turbines that produce electricity. ] (More)
