Weegy: Here is how I write research papers. I have no idea what sort of research paper you want to write (grad level, 7th grade?). I am a grad student, so modify this to work for you! 1. Identify your topic. [ Make sure it is not too broad for your length requirement. In other words, if you only need to write a 15 page paper, don't pick a topic like "Prostitution in the 20th Century." In 15 pages you could maybe deal with "Vice and Prostitution in 1985"... maybe. Also: Make sure you know which format you must cite in (APA, MLA, chicago) 2. Gather all relevant materials. Make sure you understand the parameters of your paper - do you need both secondary and primary sources? Start online - LexisNexis, JSTOR, EBSCO are great places to research online for journals, articles and essays. Make sure you don't believe everything you read online; people make crap up all the time. Trust books and monitored journals. You may need to go to a Historical society, law library, etc... to find more in depth research. OUTLINE: you might want to create a loose outline right now, just to help you focus 3. Start reading through your material. highlight or otherwise mark relevant information in your source material (the books and articles you've gathered). Make sure you are only marking information that pertains to your research topic. STICK TO YOUR TOPIC/THESIS!!!! Otherwise you will have a ton of useless information in the end! 4. As you are reading, you should begin to narrow your topic even further and start thinking of possible thesis statements. You MUST have a thesis statement for a research paper. 5. Once finished reading/annotating all source material: Type out the paragraphs etc.. that you highlighted. While you are doing this, make sure to paraphrase as much as possible. Make sure to CITE each bit you paraphrase as well as the direct quotes you take from your material. This will make your life so much easier in the end! 6. Now, you can put all that research away (hopefully) and just focus on all of the good bits you've pulled from your many sources. Read through them. try to figure out the best order to present all the information to your reader. ]
