Question and answer
Q: 2.4 Explain how health and safety risk assessments are monitored and reviewed
A: Two of the most important pieces of health and safety legislation affecting educational establishments across the UK are the Health and Safety at Work, etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. [ These set the standards that must be met to ensure the health and safety of all employees and others who may be affected by any work activity. Other regulations also
exist to cover work activities that carry specific risks, for example lifting and carrying, computer work and electricityRisk Assessments must be carried out as part of the safety management process and should include looking at the equipment we use, the buildings we occupy and the systems of work we employ. They must be reviewed at a specified time. Risk Assessments will be carried out by persons who are trained and competent in the process but it is essential that everyone participates to make it a success. Health and Safety performance will be monitored regularly to ensure that Risk Assessments are adequate and that the control measures are being applied and working effectively. Guidance on Risk Assessment is contained in the University Health and Safety Risk Assessment Handbook ]
