Of course it is a monophyletic group. It is not a holophyletic group. [ The cladists only want to recognize holophyletic groups, but even some of them consider such groups too heterogeneous as to be useless. For example, instead of dumping mammals and birds back into Reptilia to satisfy their ideological intolerance of paraphyletic groupgs, some of them choose to define Reptilia in such a way as to exclude the Mammals, synapsid reptiles and the therapsid reptiles. They lumped the synapsid reptiles and therapsid reptiles into Mammalia, even though the earliest synapsid reptiles has no mammalian features whatsoever.
At the same time, they lumped the birds with Reptilia even though birds are homeothermic endotherms and reptiles are poikilothermic ectotherms. Even worse, because of their crown group definition of Reptilia, the stem reptiles, i.e. the very first reptiles that evolved, cannot be placed in Reptilia. It is therefore not a surprise that most biologists world wide have rejected cladistic classifications and overwhelmingly embrace the traditional definition of Reptilia, which includes the therapsid and synapsid reptiles, as well as the stem reptiles, but excludes birds and mammals. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/?qid=20101104192241AAOPU4o
