One reason a man might stand close to a woman after talking to her, seated or otherwise, would be to indicate to the other men in the room that the lady is spoken for.

Although I don't know enough details of the situation I think that it's very possible that he got rejected by this younger woman or is in fear of being rejected. Definitely he is interested in younger woman and tries to find a way to be close with her but rather unsuccessfully.

There are a number of possible theories as to why the young man described in your question, may have feelings of apathy towards the younger woman. Perhaps he has become frustrated that his friendships must be separate from that of lust, love or marriage. He might feel that it is less of a torturous existence hating the one he loves rather than waiting in vain for a relationship that will never be. The fact that she cannot be his because of the rules of Society or possibly because she does not see him as a man worthy of her love, may strike resentment and anger, causing him to stare at her more so as it is common that we always want what we cannot have.
