User: Which of the following is an example of a fused sentence that could be repaired by using a semicolon? (Points : 2) Teaching driver's education in high school should be mandatory, it saves lives. When Mark Twain ran out of money he gave lectures it helped him pay the bills. They say time heals all wounds: she wasn't certain that time would heal hers. The huskies won their last game of the season and it was about time.

Weegy: They say time heals all wounds; she wasn't certain that time would heal hers.

The fused sentence that could be repaired by using a semicolon is "When Mark Twain ran out of money he gave lectures it helped him pay the bills." A fused sentence is a sentence with two main clauses and no punctuation.

The flag is inappropriate. In the link you have given, fused sentence is repaired by a PERIOD not a semicolon. It says "fused sentences contain two main clauses, you can always add a period". Please unflag this. This should be your correction of that sentence, "When Mark Twain ran out of money, he gave lectures. It helped him pay the bills."

It further states that: The two main clauses that the semicolon joins should be closely related in meaning. In your answer the two main clause are not closely related (running out of money, giving lecture or paying the bills?). In my answer the clauses both refer to healing wounds.

ruka-san, you haven't even looked at the entire site, have you? Scroll down and you will see "To fix a comma splice or fused sentence, use one of the FOUR strategies below." Scroll down a little further and you will see "Strategy 3 — Use a semicolon". In regards to your second comment, the two clauses are related. The sentence references how Mark Twain made money after running out of funds. It flows together, despite the heavy grammatical error.

I also forgot to address the fact that the sentence can be fixed with a semicolon, as stated in the grammar website. It can be fixed as follows: "When Mark Twain ran out of money he gave lectures; it helped him pay the bills." None of the other sentences were, by definition, fused sentences, which makes it easy for us to use the process of elimination method. I'm sorry, but I will not remove this flag as you have provided an incorrect answer.

My answer is correct because the use of the colon is wrong. Use a colon before a list or an explanation that is preceded by a clause that can stand by itself.

Here, I removed vchutkan's flag.

That is irrelevant. The sentence you provided as an answer was not, by definition, a fused sentence, despite the fact that it had incorrect punctuation.

You might have missed this comment, "I read it entirely. You on the other hand should look at Strategy 3 more carefully. The example is : Grandma still rides her Harley motorcycle; her toy poodle balances in a basket between the handlebars. From this example you will see my point on how related the two clauses should be." And why isn't it a fused sentence? All four of them are fused sentences. The only problem is to which can you use the semicolon.

Isn't it enough to you that somebody, I assume, has already agreed with me by removing your flag? It's two against one opinion already.

A fused sentence is a form of a run - on without punctuation.

In addition, I added the flag back myself because you are wrong. As another moderator on Weegy, I am going to tell you myself that you are allowed to argue your point without being flagged. Vchutkan is right with the semi-colon in the fused sentence above. In addition, you are free to answer questions incorrectly, but you should expect that incorrect answers will be flagged. This was an appropriate flagging. On another note, you need to stop insulting the other moderators who are doing their jobs correctly. We do, on occasion, make mistakes like everyone else and when it's brought to our attention, and verified, we do fix it. We will be fair to the experts on here who are doing the right thing. As moderators, when we see a high flag rate on one expert, we do take immediate alert to that particular expert to make sure they are not another expert doing a poor job and taking advantage of the monetary system. We do have those experts removed on continued abuse. So, I suggest if you want to stay on Weegy, you accept when you make mistakes but try your best to avoid doing so. A wrong answer is a wrong answer, it will happen. It is not personal to you.

I'm not here to insult. Even the defendant deserves a defense counsel. I do believe I'm presenting valid arguments. I answered according to my own research. I did consider his answer too before I picked what I picked. I had my own elimination process. Now, here is another sentence without punctuation. "The huskies won their last game of the season and it was about time." He will consider this a fused sentence too. But he did not pick it. Why?
Added 5/20/2012 3:15:46 AM
The sentence, "The huskies won their last game of the season and it was about time." is not a fused sentence because it includes a coordinating conjunction.
