How do disease trends impact the delivery of health care services, such as treatment options and resources available to the public?
Weegy: In the early 1900s public health departments were dealing with large numbers of infectious diseases - Tb, measles, mumps, influenza, chicken pox, small pox, cholera, etc. [ The public health officials had to deal with outbreaks of viral and bacterial infections for which they had no effective treatment. All they could do was isolate the diseased. Over the last 100 years most of those diseases have been controlled either by vaccines (chicken pox, measles, mumps, rubella, etc.) or eradicated (small pox, which no longer exists except in some vials in Russia and at the CDC). The development of antibiotics revolutionized medicine, making many bacterial infections curable. Now we are facing a crisis in medicine. Antibiotics are being overused and bacteria are developing resistance. MRSA (Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is becoming all too prevalent. The previously curable diseases are becoming less curable. Tuberculosis is becoming resistant. Public health departments have been focusing on STDs and vaccinations for the past 30 years. HIV clinics opened up all over the country. Now HIV is not the death sentence it was 20 years ago. The focus is shifting to Hepatitis B, C and D, Tb and MRSA. STDs continue to be important because of increasing antibiotic resistance. Public services are still concentrated on vaccines and STDs, but that includes the hepatitis group and TB. The health departments used to be 10-20% of the city or state budget, but now the health departments are the biggest part of any governmental budget. We are spending more and more money on providing services to those who cannot afford health insurance, including the homeless, students, the elderly, those people with chronic diseases and disabilities. The advancement of medicine has expanded treatment options in every branch - infectious disease, auto-immune disorders, heart disease, diabetes, psychiatric disorders, etc. The problem now is that there is not enough money to provide every ...
