The amount of Oxygen produced is surplus to its metabolic requirements and is therefore released into the atmosphere. In this special group of plants (called CAM plants) the CO2 enters the plant at night and is stored by the plant in special structures. The sperm of bryophytes need water to swim to an egg. Gas exchange is more efficient in wet areas. Without moisture, rhizoids cannot anchor the plants.

Nonvascular plants cannot live in as many areas as vascular plants, so they stay small. Nonvascular plants do not reproduce as quickly as vascular plants do, so they do not grow as large. Vascular tissue carries water and nutrients much more efficiently than can be carried by diffusion.
