Question and answer
Q: How does treasure function in Beowulf?
A: The answer that comes to mind first is that the dragon's treasure is what leads to Beowulf's death, but actually treasure is important throughout the epic.. [ Over and over, we're told that one function of a good leader was to distribute treasure among his men. In fact, the most common kenning for a king was "ring-giver," and the gold rings a king gave his followers were armbands, not finger
rings. When Wiglaf is working up his courage to go to Beowulf's aid against the dragon, he reminds himself of all the precious gifts Beowulf has given him, and he exhorts his comrades (in vain) to remember them. too. Then as Beowulf is dying, he has Wiglaf carry the treasure out of th cave so that he can see what he has given his life for, and he asks that it be used for the good of his people. It's a measure of their devotion to him that instead they burn it on his funeral pyre. ]
