Suppose y varies directly with x, and y = 8 when x = –6. The direct variation equation relates x and y is y = -1.33x , the value of y = 2.67 when x = –2.

If y = kx

8 = -6k

k = -4/3

y = -4/3x

y = -1.33x

when x = -2

y = -4/3*(-2)

y = 8/3

y = 2.67

If y = kx

8 = -6k

k = -4/3

y = -4/3x

y = -1.33x

when x = -2

y = -4/3*(-2)

y = 8/3

y = 2.67
