Health is a personal and private matter. The health information that patients
share with physicians could change their lives or cause them to lose
jobs or friends. [ Nevertheless, medical information must be recorded in
medical records and communicated to others in the course of treatment
and payment. To ensure that health information is protected from misuse,
a federal law, the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act, or
HIPAA (pronounced hip-uh), regulates how electronic patient information
is stored and shared.
HIPAA has three rules that are important in medical offices:
1. HIPAA Privacy Rule—The privacy requirements cover patients’
2. HIPAA Security Rule—The security requirements state the
administrative, technical, and physical safeguards that are
required to protect patients’ health information.
3. HIPAA Electronic Transaction and Code Sets Standards—These
standards require every provider who does business electronically
