An old dogma suggested that they do not divide at all, but this was disproved in the 50s and 60s. [ A couple of areas of neurogenesis (=development of new neurons) have been pinpointed in the adult brain, for example in the hippocampus. Interestingly a reduction in hippocampal neurogenesis is robustly associated with depression, though I appreciate this is a little off topic.
